Finding My Pace in Paradise: My Bohol Marathon Journey

Last year, I stumbled upon the Bohol International Marathon on social media and was immediately intrigued by its unique concept. The idea of indulging in lechon stops during a marathon was unlike anything I had ever heard of! Coupled with the stunning beauty of Bohol, it was an irresistible opportunity.

In August 2024, I embarked on my 21KM journey in Bohol, arriving a few days early to explore the picturesque Alona Beach. As a solo traveler, I was eager to discover what this island paradise had to offer. To reach Bohol, I booked a round-trip flight from Manila to Tagbilaran Airport. Upon arrival, I hailed a tricycle to the BE Grand Hotel to pick up my racing kit. Afterward, I continued my journey by tricycle to my Airbnb accommodation, Alona Vikings Lodge. While the lodge offered a peaceful retreat away from Alona's bustling nightlife, its proximity to commercial areas was a minor drawback. Renting a motorcycle would have made exploring the area much easier, but as a non-rider, I had to rely on walking to reach nearby convenience stores and restaurants. Despite the inconvenience, I enjoyed exploring Alona Beach and immersing myself in the vibrant atmosphere of the area. The first day was a whirlwind of new experiences, from strolling along the beach to checking the establishments around the area.

Before the marathon, I decided to explore more of Bohol with an exhilarating island-hopping adventure. To prepare myself for the upcoming race, I started my day with a quick 5km run. The island-hopping tour, coordinated by a local tricycle driver, promised dolphin watching, but unfortunately, we didn't encounter any. However, the other destinations were truly memorable. Snorkeling at the protected coral sanctuary was a highlight, as I observed a variety of colorful fish and even interacted with a sea turtle. Our next stop was the Virgin Island, a picturesque sandbar surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Although it was quite crowded, the experience was still enjoyable. After a day of adventure, I returned to my accommodation to rest and recharge for the marathon.

On race day, I followed my usual pre-marathon routine and made my way to the starting line on foot. The vibrant atmosphere, filled with excited runners and lively music, created an electric energy that fueled my anticipation. As I prepared for the 21KM race, I focused on stretching and warming up with my fellow runners. With a mix of excitement and determination, I crossed the starting line, leaving my worries behind. The course was well-organized, with ample hydration stations and the promised lechon stops. The scenic route, with minimal inclines, allowed me to enjoy the experience and push myself to my limits. I completed the race in 2 hours and 30 minutes, at a pace of 7:04 minutes per kilometer. Crossing the finish line was a moment of pure joy and accomplishment. After the race, I returned to my accommodation to rest and prepare for my journey home. The Bohol International Marathon was an unforgettable experience that I'll cherish for years to come.

Running has become more than just a hobby for me; it's a way of life. Never did I imagine that my love for running would lead me to explore such incredible places as Bohol. Running has provided me with a much-needed escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The physical and mental benefits of running are truly invaluable. I am grateful for the opportunity to participate in the Bohol International Marathon and look forward to exploring more running events in the future.

My Blogging Journey Begins

Introduction Turning 35, I found myself lost in a social media maze. A podcast about beating money worries sparked a lightbulb moment: I needed to share my story. Inspired by financial experts, philosophy gurus, and the freedom of running, I decided to start this blog. It's a place to talk about money, life lessons, and finding my pace. Overcoming Debt I was buried under almost 100K pesos in credit card debt. The weight of it felt crushing. Every payday was a battle, with most of my income swallowed by interest payments. The constant anxiety of falling deeper into debt was a heavy burden. It was a wake-up call. I realized I couldn't continue living paycheck to paycheck, trapped in a cycle of endless consumption. The decision to break free was difficult, but necessary. My first goal was simple: eliminate the debt. I created a strict budget, cut back on unnecessary expenses, and allocated as much as possible towards debt repayment. It was a grueling process, filled with temptat...

Reflections from the Road: The Great UP Run and the Shared Finish Line

The first quarter of 2025 culminated fittingly: on the familiar paths of the UP Academic Oval, tackling my first-ever Great UP Run in the 10km category. As a newcomer to this specific event, I approached the start line with measured expectations. What unfolded, however, was a powerful testament to the vibrant and rapidly growing running culture here in the Philippines. Sharing the road with over 4,000 participants in just the 10km race alone was a sight to behold – a river of determined individuals filling the Oval. The 4:30 AM gun start plunged us into the pre-dawn darkness, reinforcing the wisdom of the organizers' advice to bring headlights. Navigating the early stages was a lesson in managing chaos. The sheer density of runners made finding a consistent pace challenging. Observing several stumbles nearby served as a stark reminder of the need for mindful footing and pacing, especially when visibility is low – a reminder that haste often undermines progress. My initial strate...

Thirty-Five and Thriving: My Life's Biggest Takeaways

Thirty-five years have flown by, and while I can't claim to have life figured out, I’ve certainly had my share of adventures. It’s been a journey filled with ups and downs, each experience shaping the person I am today. In this post, I’ll share three invaluable lessons I’ve learned along the way that continue to guide me as I navigate this next chapter of life. Overcoming Overthinking “We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” Seneca’s words have been a constant reminder for me. I’ve always been someone who struggles to express emotions, and when I can’t articulate my feelings, my mind races, creating countless worst-case scenarios. These imagined catastrophes often caused unnecessary anxiety and prevented me from fully enjoying the present moment. To combat this, I’ve started practicing mindfulness and meditation through running. These techniques have helped me become more aware of my thoughts and learn to let go of those that don’t serve me. Additionally, I’ve made a consci...
