The first quarter of 2025 culminated fittingly: on the familiar paths of the UP Academic Oval, tackling my first-ever Great UP Run in the 10km category. As a newcomer to this specific event, I approached the start line with measured expectations. What unfolded, however, was a powerful testament to the vibrant and rapidly growing running culture here in the Philippines. Sharing the road with over 4,000 participants in just the 10km race alone was a sight to behold – a river of determined individuals filling the Oval.
The 4:30 AM gun start plunged us into the pre-dawn darkness,
reinforcing the wisdom of the organizers' advice to bring headlights.
Navigating the early stages was a lesson in managing chaos. The sheer density
of runners made finding a consistent pace challenging. Observing several
stumbles nearby served as a stark reminder of the need for mindful footing and
pacing, especially when visibility is low – a reminder that haste often
undermines progress. My initial strategy to utilize the sidewalks for clearer passage
was a reasonable adaptation, though quickly mirrored by others facing the same
obstacle. It was a small exercise in accepting what one cannot control – the
actions of the crowd – and focusing instead on navigating the immediate
surroundings as best as possible.
The route itself presented its own challenges, a rhythmic mix of uphills demanding effort and downhills requiring controlled footing. These natural obstacles are part of the run's character, tests to be met rather than resented. Thankfully, well-placed hydration stations offered welcome replenishment, allowing us to address the body's needs amidst the exertion.
I crossed the finish line achieving my personal goal: a sub-1-hour 10km. There's satisfaction in meeting a target set. Yet, I also acknowledge a truth that comes with time and experience: reaching that sub-1 benchmark demands more focus and effort with each passing year. This isn't a cause for frustration, but an observation to be accepted. The value lies not just in the time recorded, but in the consistent effort, the discipline practiced, and the willingness to engage with the challenge.
Ultimately, the joy of these events extends beyond personal bests. It's the convergence of thousands, each running their own race for their own reasons, yet all heading towards the same finish line. In this shared experience, there's a powerful metaphor for life itself – diverse journeys, individual struggles, yet a common destination.
The energy, the palpable excitement on race day, and the visual evidence of a burgeoning running community are incredibly encouraging. Witnessing so many Filipinos embracing a more active lifestyle is a positive force. It was more than just a run; it was a shared movement, a collective stride towards health and vitality, and a truly great view to see.
