Contemplating a Career Shift: My Journey So Far

“I stopped liking my job but I keep working because it pays well, and that makes me feel sick but not sick enough to quit which makes me even more sick” – from the movie Good Grief (2023)

After spending nearly 13 years in the BPO industry, I've held a variety of roles, from a regular agent to a managerial position. While I've achieved success and gained valuable experience in this field, I've begun to question if it truly aligns with my long-term goals and personal aspirations.

Despite the security and comfort of my current position, I've been feeling a growing sense of dissatisfaction. The daily grind of meetings, KPIs, and client management has become routine, but it no longer ignites my passion. I yearn for a career that is more fulfilling and aligns with my true self.

As I contemplate this career shift, I'm grappling with the fear of the unknown. Leaving a stable job and venturing into a new field is daunting, especially when it comes to providing for my family. However, I'm determined to explore my options and discover a career path that truly resonates with my heart and mind.

What made me feel this way?

As an introvert, I've always struggled with social interactions and constant communication. The demands of my current role, which requires extensive people interaction, can be draining and overwhelming. While I've learned to adapt and perform well in this environment, it's not something that comes naturally to me.

Deep down, I know I'm capable of more. I believe I have the potential to contribute significantly to a field that better aligns with my introverted nature and personal values. However, the fear of stepping outside my comfort zone and into the unknown is daunting. What if I make the wrong decision? What if I fail? These uncertainties have kept me trapped in a career that doesn't fulfill me.

 Preparing for the Leap

To prepare for a potential career change, I've been taking several proactive steps. First, I've focused on building my financial security by growing my savings and investments. This will provide a safety net if I decide to leave my current job.

Second, I've expanded my skill set by completing Google Certifications in AI Essentials and Digital Marketing & E-commerce. Additionally, I've been exploring the field of virtual assistance by acquiring relevant resources and materials. To broaden my horizons, I've also considered the possibility of living abroad and researching the pros and cons of such a move.

To gain a deeper understanding of personal finance and investment strategies, I've been listening to financial podcasts like 'The Chink Positive' by Chinkee Tan and 'The 80 Percent' by Fitz Villafuerte. These podcasts have provided valuable insights and practical advice.

To manage my inner thoughts and anxieties, I've turned to Stoicism. This philosophy has been instrumental in helping me navigate uncertainty and maintain a positive mindset. While it's been challenging to consistently apply Stoic principles, I've found that it's a valuable tool for managing my emotions and staying focused on my goals.

Finally, I've ventured into the world of social media as a way to explore potential career opportunities and share my knowledge. I've created accounts on TikTok and Instagram, where I post content related to Stoicism, personal finance, and running. While I'm still in the early stages of this endeavor, I find it to be a rewarding and enjoyable way to connect with others and explore new possibilities.

By taking these proactive steps, I'm building a solid foundation for my future career move. While I still have fears and uncertainties, I'm becoming more confident and prepared to take the leap when the time is right.

I'm a realist, and I understand that a career change will significantly impact my life in many ways. After dedicating 13 years to my current career, I've invested a lot of time, effort, and energy into my professional growth.

I know that stepping outside of my comfort zone will require careful preparation and a willingness to embrace uncertainty. While I may not be fully prepared for everything that lies ahead, I believe that the steps I've taken to build my skills, knowledge, and financial security will provide a valuable shield against the unknown.

Although I can't guarantee a smooth transition, I'm confident that my learnings and experiences will equip me to navigate this new path and create a life that is truly fulfilling.

Thank you for reading. I hope this post has inspired you to take a leap of faith and pursue a career that truly fulfills you. Remember, you're not alone in this journey.

My Blogging Journey Begins

Introduction Turning 35, I found myself lost in a social media maze. A podcast about beating money worries sparked a lightbulb moment: I needed to share my story. Inspired by financial experts, philosophy gurus, and the freedom of running, I decided to start this blog. It's a place to talk about money, life lessons, and finding my pace. Overcoming Debt I was buried under almost 100K pesos in credit card debt. The weight of it felt crushing. Every payday was a battle, with most of my income swallowed by interest payments. The constant anxiety of falling deeper into debt was a heavy burden. It was a wake-up call. I realized I couldn't continue living paycheck to paycheck, trapped in a cycle of endless consumption. The decision to break free was difficult, but necessary. My first goal was simple: eliminate the debt. I created a strict budget, cut back on unnecessary expenses, and allocated as much as possible towards debt repayment. It was a grueling process, filled with temptat...

Reflections from the Road: The Great UP Run and the Shared Finish Line

The first quarter of 2025 culminated fittingly: on the familiar paths of the UP Academic Oval, tackling my first-ever Great UP Run in the 10km category. As a newcomer to this specific event, I approached the start line with measured expectations. What unfolded, however, was a powerful testament to the vibrant and rapidly growing running culture here in the Philippines. Sharing the road with over 4,000 participants in just the 10km race alone was a sight to behold – a river of determined individuals filling the Oval. The 4:30 AM gun start plunged us into the pre-dawn darkness, reinforcing the wisdom of the organizers' advice to bring headlights. Navigating the early stages was a lesson in managing chaos. The sheer density of runners made finding a consistent pace challenging. Observing several stumbles nearby served as a stark reminder of the need for mindful footing and pacing, especially when visibility is low – a reminder that haste often undermines progress. My initial strate...

Thirty-Five and Thriving: My Life's Biggest Takeaways

Thirty-five years have flown by, and while I can't claim to have life figured out, I’ve certainly had my share of adventures. It’s been a journey filled with ups and downs, each experience shaping the person I am today. In this post, I’ll share three invaluable lessons I’ve learned along the way that continue to guide me as I navigate this next chapter of life. Overcoming Overthinking “We suffer more in imagination than in reality.” Seneca’s words have been a constant reminder for me. I’ve always been someone who struggles to express emotions, and when I can’t articulate my feelings, my mind races, creating countless worst-case scenarios. These imagined catastrophes often caused unnecessary anxiety and prevented me from fully enjoying the present moment. To combat this, I’ve started practicing mindfulness and meditation through running. These techniques have helped me become more aware of my thoughts and learn to let go of those that don’t serve me. Additionally, I’ve made a consci...
